maya

Maya is a sanscrit word for illusion. In reality we experience just a projection of the environment. We are just a drop of water in an endless ocean of time. It is an illusion to think that anything lasts or is separate from each other.

Artist Statement

Artist Statement:
"We come spinning out of nothingness, scattering stars like dust" - Rumi
I am fascinated by the idea of embodiment as a receptacle of energy. The concept of
matter suggests by its very existence that there exists a polar opposite: nothingness.
Polarities frame our real experience of life and death, microscopic and macrocosmic
universe, bounded forms and infinity, entanglement and open space, and visible and
invisible . One question in particular, I ask is whether the origin of energy comes from a
void in space? Can energy spontaneously appear? Energy is nebulous. For the past
thirty years, I have been interested in the human body's ability to liberate energy
physically in connection to the mimetic process of sculpture. It is as if inert matter can
be made alive. My practice has previously focused on sculpture and painting the human
figure. However, I am now taking the question of embodiment and energy in a
expressive conceptual direction.
My new multimedia artworks portray the immaterial, the ephemeral, and the infinite.
The art is process oriented and explores automatism which dates back to the
Surrealists. The images are propelled up from my unconscious, and the work is material
based. I am sculpting in large scale, as well as maquette sized installations in boxes. I
use wire, wood, clay, and papier-mâché. I am drawing with chalk, pastel, and painting in
acrylic and oils. I am also creating digital montages, implementing video, photography,
sculpture, and painting in the same artwork. These new installations demonstrate how
the subatomic, quantum world, mirrors the macrocosmic world, I can also display the
polarities of constricted forms in tightly bound in masses existing in tension with infinite
space. Reality is comprised of contradictions and chaos, as well as order.
Consciousness penetrates matter and traverses all energy states. It is a type of
spirituality as ancient as the ancient Vedanta philosophy of Hinduism. It speaks of
oneness and wholeness. It links energy embodied in our universe and reveals the
interconnectedness to all matter. My work contributes to an era in which science and
technology are discovering things at such a pace our metrics have trouble keeping
abreast of new findings. It can also offer a quiet place to reside in our complex, hurried
and sensory overstimulated world.

Interstitial Installation Close up

Interstitial Installation

Interstitial Installation

This installation measures 9 1/2 'W x 8'D x 10'H, I have made a video of the process of the construction. It sprang from my unconscious, and was process driven. It was a great deal of fun, and I many times became entangled within its grips!

Interstitial Moving Cocoon

We live in a multilayered universe, what about between the layers, what exists there.

Submerged

Layers upon layers bathing each other in light. Though sometimes not affecting each other at all. Sometimes the layers are so opaque, the light cannot get through. Its as though these layers of time were in another dimension.

Contemplating Neurons

I am focusing on the boxes in my work right now. Whether it be manipulating the photo images, making new boxes or even painting the images on paper. I am also in the process of creating an installation in my studio. The space is around 15' x 15' x 10'. Its exciting yet I am creating as I go along. I don't want to be stuck in having to recreate a specific plan. I want to see how the process evolves in the moment. I think about it all the time.

Quantum Red Dress

I am experimenting with Adobe photoshop. I am utilizing photos of my boxes with photos of dancers that I shot 2 months ago. The process is slow for me right now but with time my skills will become more refined. I have also printed some of these images on different types of rag paper. i am pleased with the results.
